As the year 2005 and Clinical Medicine & Research's 3rd year of publication begin, several exciting things are happening - Clinical Medicine & Research (CM&R) has been selected to participate in the PubMed Central project. PubMed Central is the full text, free access, archival database of scientific literature developed by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Full text articles from PubMed Central journals are available via the PubMed Central interface (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/). Abstracts of these articles are also deposited in the PubMed (MEDLINE) database and can easily be found via topical searches of PubMed (MEDLINE). These abstracts are also linked to PubMed Central for full text access.

There are two subtle differences between PubMed Central and MEDLINE. First, articles in PubMed Central journals are available in full text, without access controls (although some journals do require a short embargo period on access to the full text, CM&R will not) and second, the articles in PubMed Central journals do not go through NLM's indexing process that assigns MeSH (Medical Subject Heading) terms, NLM's controlled vocabulary of search terms. Articles from PubMed Central journals can be found in the PubMed database by searching for terms found in titles and abstracts or by the author(s) name(s). Until CM&R is indexed in MEDLINE, our articles will not have MeSH terms assigned and will be accessed through PubMed searches only of this latter type. CM&R continues to be indexed by Chemical Abstract Services, EBSCO host EJS, and the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). Articles published in CM&R will be available in PubMed Central early in 2005.

Clinical Medicine & Research is also scheduled for review by the NLM's Literature Selection Technical Review Committee (LSTRC) during 2005. The LSTRC is responsible for making recommendations of new journals to be added to MEDLINE. If selected for indexing, the articles from all issues of CM&R starting with our premier issue, January 2003, will be assigned MeSH terms, and indexed in MEDLINE.

In addition to these exciting indexing developments, Clinical Medicine & Research is getting a new web site. Development hasbegun with HighWire Press, a division of the Stanford University Libraries, to create a new, more visible, more polished, and more user-friendly site. HighWire Press is a high traffic portal receiving nearly 1 billion hits per month. Hosting more than 780 scientific and medical journal web sites, HighWire Press provides access to more than 800,000 free, full text articles from journals they host. CM&R's new web site will now offer such helpful features as email alerts for electronic Table of Contents and new articles, citation tracking, improved intra- and inter-journal searching and, most exciting of all, CM&R will begin offering electronic publishing ahead of print - a feature we anticipate will greatly enhance CM&R's quarterly print publication schedule. We anticipate the new site will go live in May to correspond with the release of the May 2005 issue.

Lastly, the Editor-in-Chief and I would like to extend our appreciation to all the authors, readers, reviewers and editorial board members for your support over the past 2 years. The success of Clinical Medicine & Research depends upon your continued support through comments and suggestions for improvements and through the submission and review of manuscripts. For those of you who have contributed articles in the last 2 years, your trust and belief in the future of the journal is greatly appreciated. We look forward to working with you on additional submissions. If you have not yet submitted a manuscript, we invite you to submit an original work.

As you will note, Clinical Medicine & Research is growing and expanding its reach throughout the world. Manuscripts published in CM&R will soon be accessible to all scientists, clinicians and clinical care providers with an Internet connection. We hope you will consider contributing your work to Clinical Medicine & Research.

The following are submission deadlines for the remaining 2005 issues:

2005 Issue Submission deadline
May February 25, 2005
August May 15, 2005
November August 15, 2005

With best wishes for a happy, healthy, and productive year,

Sherry A. Salzman
 Senior Editor
