Clinical Medicine & Research celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013. Since its inception in January 2003, the journal’s editorial board has remained committed to publishing original medical research and clinically relevant information of interest to a broad audience of healthcare professionals and medical researchers. The fields of medicine, preventative medicine, epidemiology, and basic science have greatly evolved since the first issue of Clinical Medicine & Research, and even more so since the publication of its earliest predecessor, The Bulletin of the Marshfield Clinic, more than 6 decades ago. In the early 1950’s, the first Bulletin was published as a means of providing education and a discussion forum for Wisconsin health care practitioners who often were the only primary care resource for a rural region, and thus needed a breadth of knowledge about a variety of medical topics.
Since that time, the growth of the Marshfield Clinic system (currently about 750 physicians in more than 80 medical specialties, and 150 medical researchers) has been paralleled by the growth and development of scholarly publishing by Marshfield Clinic (currently, Clinical Medicine & Research receives, on average, 34,000 hits per week on its website, with more than 137,000 full-text article views and 91,000 article PDFs downloaded in 2013). The calculated move by Marshfield Clinic and the editorial board from a “house journal” – publishing research only from its own institution – to one that publishes articles from national and international contributors that are rigorously peer-reviewed by experts throughout the world, Clinical Medicine & Research was accepted by the US National Library of Medicine for indexing in the prestigious Index Medicus/MEDLINE database within its first 3 years of publication. Clinical Medicine & Research was also quickly invited for inclusion in the respected national and international scientific literature databases of EMBASE, Scopus, Chemical Abstract Services, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, EBSCOhost Electronic Journal Services, and Index Copernicus. Clinical Medicine & Research is also digitally archived by PubMed Central, and listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals. Supporting the Marshfield Clinic’s mission of research and education, Clinical Medicine & Research is committed to publishing clinically-relevant, rigorously peer-reviewed, original scientific medical research that may substantially improve human health and well-being. Full-text access to published articles is available worldwide, currently, via the journal’s website (http://www.clinmedres.org/), and the journal’s PubMed Central archive (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/journals/252/).
