ON THE COVER: See related article: Genotyping Parkinson Disease-Associated Mitochondrial Polymorphisms pp. 99-106. Mitochondria within human cells fluoresce red when stained with the probe MitoTracker Red CMXRos (Molecular Probes, Eugene, Oregon). The mitochondrial morphology can switch between the familiar ovoid-shape to a single branched structure depending on the stage of the cell cycle. In this issue of Clinical Medicine & Research, Jiang et al. describe a rapid method for identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms that define mitochondrial DNA haplogroups using mitochondria isolated from human blood.
